Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen launch the Jetta sedan in US which will be available this October with prices starting at $15,995.

The new Jetta's crispier exterior styling with the Audi-esque rear-end and Scirocco-like fascia was inspired / previewed by the NCC coupe concept car shown at the Detroit Show this past January.

For the first time, the new Jetta will not be sharing any body components with its Golf brethren, though underneath, the two models share most parts as the four-door sedan uses a modified version of the Golf's architecture.

The saloon's dimensions have been re-proportioned compared with those of the concept car and the outgoing Jetta model. The 2011 Jetta measures 182.7 inches (4.64 meters) long, 57.1 inches (1.45 meters) tall and 70.1 inches (1.78 meters) wide, making it 3.54 inches or 90mm longer than the previous model.

In addition, it also boasts a 2.76-in. or 70mm longer wheelbase with obvious benefits for passenger space. According to Volkswagen, legroom is now a 38.1 inches or 967 mm, which represents a gain of 2.6 inches 67 mm over the outgoing Jetta.

Inside, the 2011 Jetta's interior styling is far less refreshing than the exterior. In fact, it's as if [almost] nothing changed over the outgoing model. Even the instrument cluster looks eerily similar as VW did not go for the deeply recessed main dials of the Golf VI opting instead for a more plain looking instrument panel.

In Europe, the new Jetta will eventually be offered with a total of six engines, all turbocharged. The petrol range includes the 105HP 1.2-liter TSI, 122HP 1.4-liter TSI, 160HP 1.4-liter TSI and the 200HP 2.0-liter TSI.

Diesel fans will get two common rail units, a 105HP 1.6-liter TDI and a 140HP 2.0 TDI. Except for the 1.2 TSI, all engines may be paired with either a 6-speed or 7-speed (depending on the model) DSG dual clutch transmission.

The 1.2 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel are also equipped with the BlueMotion Technology package that includes a Start-Stop system and battery regeneration.

Volkswagen claims that the 1.2 TSI BlueMotion Technology model consumes 5.3 lt/100 km (44.3mpg US or 53.3mpg UK)with 123 g/km CO2, while the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology attains a combined fuel consumption of just 4.1 l/100 km (57.3mpg US or 68.9mpg UK) with 109 g/km CO2.

Unfortunately for North American consumers, VW will not offer (or at least not for the time being) the 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI petrol units. Instead, U.S. and Canadian buyers will continue to get the same ol' 2.5-liter five-cylinder petrol found on the outgoing model.

Other powerplant options will include a 2.0-liter turbodiesel featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs-ft. of torque (320Nm) that can propel the car from 0 to 60mph in 8.7 seconds, a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol, and from 2011, a range-topping 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol.

All Jetta engines will be equipped with a manual transmission as standard with automatic transmissions offered as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG.

Volkswagen Golf Cabrio

Volkswagen has released the first photos of the 2011 Golf Cabriolet, prior to its official launch at the 2011 Geneva motor show.
New in 2011? I could've sworn that they'd already released the Golf cabrio?

It's that sort of car, the Golf Cabrio. But we can assure you this is actually a new vehicle. There hasn't been a Golf soft-top since 2002, and that car was a Mk3 Golf in Mk4 clothing.
Where's the 'basket handle' rollover hoop?

Previous Golf Cabriolets have sported a prominent rollover bar, For the Mk6 edition, Volkswagen has installed a pop-up rollover protection system, as found on the Eos, New Beetle and (whisper it) Audi A3 cabriolets. The system deploys in milliseconds, and allows the 2011 Golf Cabriolet to dispense with one of its predecessors' visual hallmarks.

You'll also notice that the convertible roof hides nearly flush with the body in the latest Golf convertible. That soft-top is now electrically operated as standard, and can switch from fresh-air to fully enclosed in 9.5 seconds. You can even go topless at speeds up to 18mph.
Anything else I should know?

Head- and taillights derived from the Golf GTI, a more steeply inclined windscreen, a bootlid that drops into the bumper to allow access to the 250 litres of boot space, and a chrome strip around the perimeter of the cabin are the key exterior changes (after the decapitation).

That chrome edging in particular put us in mind of the current A3 soft-top. Inside, there's a 50:50 split-folding rear bench and the controls for the roof on the centre console - other than that it's the standard Golf interior.

The Golf Cabriolet will come with six engines at launch: four TSI petrol engines from 1.2 to 2.0 litres, and two TDI diesels. VW is most proud of the 104bhp 1.6 TDI, which should achieve 117g/km CO2 figures if you can stomach some distant diesel clatter.

Further information on pricing and availability for the UK is expected following the Golf Cabriolet's debut at the 2011 Geneva motor show.

Volkswagen Bulli

This is the new VW Bulli, a small electric MPV unveiled on the eve of the 2011 Geneva motor show. 'Bulli' was the German name for the 1950's T1, what the US market called the Microbus, and the new Bulli concept is an evolution of the lovely Microbus concept revealed in 2001. The new concept is smaller than Microbus concept and has an EV powerplant.
So what’s is the VW Bulli all about?

It’s an sub-Meriva MPV – it's nearly 300mm shorter than the little Vauxhall people carrier. VW design supremo Walter de Silva told CAR the Bulli is related to the Up family. 'It's wider though and 4m long. There is an intention to launch something like this in the B-MPV segment.' In the metal the VW Bulli has the air of a production car waiting to be green-lighted: seals, switchgear, door hinges are all ready to go and the minders didn't mind us clambering all over it. When the Bulli is launched it’ll be VW’s fifth MPV, and sit alongside the Caddy, Touran, Sharan and Caravelle.

The design is clean, crisp and minimalist, and once again moves VW’s new look another step forward. Cool details abound. The VW badge on the snout is a good 12in tall and the two-tone paint is striking. The interior is clever too, with a sandwich floor construction hiding the battery pack and giving a flat floor – don't expect a leather floor in production however. There's Fiat Multipla-style three-abreast seating, with a bench up front and 60:40 folding rear seats, a panoramic glass roof, and all the infotainment is controlled via an iPad, with a separate for the gear selector.
What’s the technology under the skin?

The VW Bulli concept is a front-wheel drive EV, with an 85kW electric motor able to produce 199lb ft, and a lithium-ion battery pack with a 40kWh storage capacity. VW reckons this is enough fro a 186-mile zero-emissions range, 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and a 88mph (limited) top speed. With a ‘quick charge’ system, replenishing the batteries will take under an hour, too. Range not big enough? VW admits a 1.0 or 1.4-litre engine from its current range will easily fit in the Bulli.

Volkswagen has revealed the facelifted Eos cabriolet that is set to have its world premiere at the LA show in November. Expected to go on sale in January next year, the car undergoes aesthetic changes to be more in tune with the rest of Volkswagen’s range.

The front gets a new grille, headlamps with LED running lights, new bumper and side mirror design. The back will see the use of a new diffuser, new back bumper and LED tail lights. The original Eos used the Mk5 Golf’s looks; this one takes after the Mk6.

Changes to the inside are minimal with the use of new colours, new dials for the climate control, along with new tech such as a remote control for the retractable hardtop, new colour display and a keyless entry and starting system.

Changes under the hood are also minimal with the improvement in fuel efficiency for the 2.0 litre TDI engine, which sees fuel consumption drop to 4.8 l/100 km.

2011 Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen is slowly in the process of refreshing its entire product portfolio, and right on the heels of the recently introduced 2011 Jetta comes the seventh-generation Passat. The automaker's new corporate design language is in full force here, and observations of the new Passat looking like a big Jetta will not be disagreed with.

A full range of gasoline and diesel engines will be available when the Passat launches later this year. In North America, it's safe to assume that we'll receive the 207-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as well as the 296-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6, but we won't rule out the possibility of Volkswagen offering its well-liked 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine, as well. All engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and like previous Passats, 4Motion all-wheel drive should be available on top-end models.

The Passat will also be available with Volkswagen's XDS electronic differential, which first debuted on the GTI hatch. This system helps reduce understeer and improve overall traction in slippery conditions, and we imagine that it will quickly make its way to the vast majority of VW products. What's more, a new optional city emergency braking function automatically stops the car at speeds below 18 miles per hour when an imminent collision is detected, sort of like the self-stopping systems by Volvo (which, as we've seen, don't always work correctly).

Both the sedan and wagon Estate models go on sale in the UK next month, though don't get too attached to the cars if you live in the U.S. The new Passat will only be sold in Europe and other global markets, while North America will get specially-designed-for-us New Midsized Sedan, or NMS. Hit the jump for the full details in VW's press blast.
