Cosworth brings supercar performance figures to a hothatch in the form of a Subaru Impreza.

Starting with the Impreza STI's 2.5-liter boxer unit, Cosworth's engineers installed new high-performance pistons, connecting rods, head gasket and bearings. The tune-up also includes a remapped ECU, modified turbocharger and wastegate, and a custom exhaust system.

The result is an impressive output of 400PS (395bhp) at 5,750rpm, sufficient to dispatch the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 from zero to 62mph (100km/h) in a mere 3.7 seconds. In comparison, the standard 300PS (296bhp) Impreza WRX STI completes the 0-62mph sprint in 5.2 seconds.

Subaru reports that the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 also gets a revamped suspension with new coil springs and a 10mm lower ride-height as well as a bespoke brake package with six-pot callipers and 355mm discs at the front that was developed in partnership with AP Racing.

In the styling department, the changes are extremely subtle consisting of a redesigned front bumper with an integrated lower spoiler and a mesh grille, Cosworth logos, a different rear spoiler and specific 18-inch alloy wheels.

Finally, the limited edition Impreza STI CS400 gets a pair of Recaro bucket seats, glossy black dashboard trim and Cosworth badges.As all special edition machine, there will only be 75 copies of this fire breathing Impreza.

Subaru’s rear-drive sports car

While Toyota unveiled a revised version of its FT-86 sports car at the 2011 Geneva motor show, Subaru chose to only preview the powertrain of its 'Toyobaru' rear-drive sports coupe. Subaru and Toyota are developing the car together, and each will produce a version of the rear-drive coupe in 2012, but so far it’s been Toyota that’s grabbed all the limelight.
So this is Subaru’s version of the Toyota FT-86?

Yes, though Subaru was originally due to show a full concept version of its RWD sports car at Geneva, but has instead only revelead the powertrain and basic body shape – not the best move, as the Toyota looks good, and without body panels you only imagine this Scooby version to have bland, flat body panels. The engine is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre flat four, and the car rides on 17in wheels.

We have no name for the car either, and even Subaru keeps changing what it calls the concept: just a few weeks ago it was the ‘Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept’, but now it’s the slightly snappier ‘Boxer Sports Car Architecture’.

Subaru has also set up a website for interested customers to learn more about the new car – and Subaru’s departure from its famed all-wheel drive chassis. The promise: ‘the RWD Sports Car adds a completely new package to Subaru’s existing AWD line-up, making Subaru’s legendary on-road performance even more accessible. Its stunning performance stems from Subaru’s key component – the horizontally opposed boxer engine. The ‘Boxer Sports Car Architecture’ embodies Subaru’s new definition of driving excitement, and is a true technical masterpiece that assure drivers a level of confidence that only Subaru can provide.’

Both Toyota and Subaru are expected to unveil the production versions of their exciting rear-drive coupes at the 2011 Tokyo motor show later this year, and production will begin in early 2012.

Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems. In phase three the judges debate and deliberate.
This year, the editors updated and expanded the judging criteria to six new categories: Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Intended Function, Efficiency, Safety and Value.
MOTOR TREND’s Sport/Utility of the Year® is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year. MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year’s crop of new SUV’s, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.
