Land Rover Range_e concept hybrid

Land Rover will show off the new Range_e diesel-electric hybrid prototype for the first time at the 2011 Geneva motor show.
Haven't we seen the hybrid Range_e before?

Yes and no. CAR readers may be familiar with this modified Range Rover Sport, which was reported here in May 2010. However, this is the first time we've seen a working prototype of the Range_e in public; it presages a production hybrid due in 2013.

By mating Land Rover’s existing TDV6 diesel engine and upcoming ZF eight-speed automatic transmission with a plug-in parallel hybrid drive module, the Range_e boasts a most un-Land Rover-like CO2 rating of 89g/km. For comparison, a regular Range Sport TDV6 musters 243g/km of CO2, while the petrol-electric Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid manages 193g/km.

A pure EV mode in the Range_e offers a claimed 20 miles of zero-emissions motoring at speeds up to 70mph, allowing mums a quieter school-run and providing a handy rationalisation to use against eco-zealous guests at dinner parties. Top speed of the Range_e is 120mph, and Land Rover claim a rather rangey 690 miles between refuelling stops for the diesel-electric prototype.
Anything else new on the Land Rover stand at Geneva?

Displayed alongside the Range_e will be the exclusive Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, also making its public debut at Geneva. As reported the other day, it's a run-out special, bristling with extra kit and even a pair of iPads built into the front seat back rests.

Land Rover will also show off Range Rover Evoque in both three-door 'coupe' and five-door forms, along with further information on the new soft-roader's extensive range of accessory option packages and pricing for Europe (but not the UK).

And finally... the Discovery 4 'Landmark' Limited Editions round off the Land Rover presence at Geneva 2011.

2011 Range Rover Wallpaper

The big news for the 2011 Range Rover is the introduction of an all-new 4.4-liter turbo diesel engine producing 313HP and 700Nm / 516.3 lb-ft of peak torque that replaces the current 3.6-liter with 271HP and 640Nm.

The V8 diesel is matched up to an also new ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifts. Land Rover claims that with this engine, the luxury 4x4 returns a combined fuel economy of 30.1mpg UK (equal to 25.1 mpg US and 9.4lt/100km) making it the first Range Rover ever to better 3 0mpg UK.

The diesel-powered Range Rover goes from rest to 60mph (96km/h) in 7.5 seconds and completes the 50mph-75mph dash in 5.1 seconds.

As far as the rest of the range is concerned, all 2011 Range Rovers benefit from an updated Terrain Response which gains Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control, some minor styling revisions to the nose, additional exterior colors and a new Exterior Design Pack option.

The Exterior Design Pack comprises of a revised front bumper with fog lamp surrounds, front grille and side vents in Titan finish, revised side sills, rear bumper and stainless steel exhaust finishers.

Land Rover LRX Concept (2011)

Overview:

The LRX is described as a cross-coupé, and dramatically extends the scope of what Land Rover stands for. Though smaller than the LR2, the LRX is conceived as a premium car, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector – those who want many of the benefits of a 4x4 and the visual presence of a larger vehicle, but in a more compact package. The first all-new Land Rover revealed since Gerry McGovern became the company's design director, LRX is a natural extension of the Land Rover range, complementing the existing models with a car that will help to define a new segment. Its many recognizable Land Rover design cues include bold new interpretations of the signature clamshell hood, the floating roof and the solid ‘wheel-at-each-corner’ stance. "LRX is a design born out of passion for the brand, but it is different, relevant, engaging and exciting – because Land Rover has never built ordinary cars," says Gerry McGovern. "LRX has a highly desirable identity and the design alludes strongly to its capability, while clearly underlining our forward-looking philosophy – it's a Land Rover that would be comfortable on Bond Street or Fifth Avenue, but wouldn’t flinch at getting its wheels dirty." Its compact size is one of its greatest assets, which will appeal to anyone who wants the versatile ability of an agile SUV with the cachet of the Land Rover name. In addition, its lower weight and the reduced aerodynamic drag resulting from the smaller frontal area give significant gains in fuel efficiency and reduced C02 emissions. The LRX concept also adopts intelligent power management systems and other technologies first shown by Land Rover in the Land_e concept in 2006. Further details of the LRX's powertrain and sustainability technologies will be released at the Detroit Auto Show. The interior of the LRX concept clearly demonstrates how a compact Land Rover can still be roomy, practical and versatile – and one with great sophistication. The impeccably executed cabin features a combination of soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate, with polished aluminum details. The ‘fast’ sloping architecture of the center console reflects the LRX’s sporty dynamics, as does the distinctive binnacle over the instrument panel. The electronic display uses "floating" LCD graphics to create a three-dimensional look that can be personalized for different drivers, as well as interacting with the LRX's touch-screen display. The instrument graphics present data in layers depending on their level of importance, to give maximum relevant information with minimum distraction. When appropriate, displayed information transfers between the main instrument cluster and the touch screen. And further adding to the LRX’s involving personality, the different drivetrain modes are matched by changes in the cabin’s background lighting color – green in economy, red in sports and blue in standard mode. The structures of the seats and instrument panel are elegant enough to be left exposed – one novel approach that Land Rover's designers have taken to reduce vehicle weight. Another example is replacing the glass for side windows and roof with polycarbonate, which is around 40 percent lighter. Even the choice of the premium quality trim materials reflects Land Rover's deep thinking about sustainability, with vegetable-tanned leather (chromium-free, so better for recycling), extensive use of aluminum (both lightweight and readily recyclable), and carpeting made of felt from sustainable sources. And the luxurious vanilla-colored "fine suede" on the door inserts and headliner is a 100 percent recycled material made from used plastic bottles. "We are determined to make sustainability a key element in our future product design and the way we do business, while still creating vehicles that have a strong emotional appeal as well as fulfill people's practical needs," says Phil Popham. "No one technology delivers all the answers to whole life sustainability, but the LRX concept brings together some of the future ideas that interest us, into a car that we believe represents an exciting way forward for Land Rover."

Land Rover & Range Rover (2010)

Overview:

Land Rover's most complete luxury all-terrain vehicle just got better: the new 2010 Range Rover. Powerful new engines, advanced interior technologies and enhanced driving dynamics reinforce the position of the 2010 Range Rover as Land Rover's most complete luxury all-terrain vehicle. Land Rover's flagship has been comprehensively updated to deliver more refined and efficient performance, along with the ultimate in interior comfort and craftsmanship. The 2010 Range Rover has two brand new 5.0-liter LR-V8 engines – the top of the range 510 bhp supercharged unit, and the 375 bhp naturally aspirated version. Both engines were developed in-house by the Jaguar Land Rover powertrain team, with the requirements of the Range Rover in mind from day one. The LR-V8 engines have been developed to deliver more power and refinement but without a corresponding increase in consumption and emissions. The result is a pair of lightweight direct fuel injection engines with class-leading efficiency, which provide significantly more usable low end torque and superior dynamic responses without compromising power at higher RPM. Both engines are compliant with stringent U.S. ULEV2 emissions regulations. The performance of the all-new naturally aspirated LR-V8 is now a virtual-match for the outgoing 4.2L supercharged engine. The new naturally aspirated vehicle completes the 0-60 mph sprint in 7.2 seconds (just 0.1 seconds off the pace of the outgoing supercharged unit). For those who want the ultimate performance Range Rover, there is now the all-new LR-V8 5.0L Supercharged, which is propelled from rest to 60 mph in an impressive 5.9 seconds.
